One of the things that makes the technology market so fascinating - for sad people like me at any rate - is the way that it produces devices like the one you mentioned.

They appear quite suddenly, and then almost as suddenly they're gone. They don't quite hit the mark, but they're interesting, nevertheless. I think the smartphone-in-a-tablet idea will fall into that category.

There now, my neck is nicely stuck out.

Innovative and stylish no doubt,Apple turned the PC from being "another brick in the wall" into an art form and i agree that the King has yet to meet its match but that's why i like the opposition. It may be that it does not catch on but as a piece of technic it is fantastic.

The limitation for office type task is not the power, the ipad does very well with documents and spreadsheets, but more likely the display size. I find that to be the main limitation, especially with spreadsheets.

"The only thing that a Tablet now needs is a comfortable Keyboard"

There are more iPad keyboards on the market than you can shake a stick at. Some of them aren't so great, but some of them are real beauties.

I cannot imaging that the Laptop has much longer to live.

Tablets are not yet powerful enough to replace 'The Lappy' for Office Type Tasks but I cannot imagine that that will be far away. Especially if M$ can get their OS to work properly on a Tablet.

The only thing that a Tablet now needs is a comfortable Keyboard and, if Siri is anything to go by, that will be history shortly.

iPad killer? I very much doubt it.

From the review in your link:-

"The concept of a smartphone that transforms into a tablet is certainly an interesting one, although whether this particular innovation catches on remains to be seen."

My prediction is that it will not catch on. So far, although many have tried, there has been no new device that even comes close to killing the iPad. It is streets ahead of the competition in my opinion. I know it pains a lot of people to hear that kind of thing because of their dislike of all things Apple, but as far as I'm concerned it's a fact.

Thats odd

Just checked Amazon and they are not even listing the iPad3. Apple has the 16GB wifi model for £399.

Apple have a very strict pricing policy and if a major supplier was over charging they would quickly act.

Rules of supply and demand coming into play. Had an email from Amazon offering me a 16gb wifi only Ipad3 for £508! I don't think so!

Some years ago i was a backseat passenger on a long car journey

.After the initial conversation died down, my fellow backseater dug out of his pocket this little shiny object and started to to play.

I showed interest and he showed me his iTouch

I was hooked and inno time acquired one and lots of fun- with Apps and sending mail from hotspots-- for six months

I recently took a trip abroad and thought' I'll take the iTouch. I wound up not going with out it - because I could not find it.

So to answer the question -Would I buy an iPad

The answer would be no thanx

For me an the new iPad is an object of desire, I will get one when I think up a good enough reason to do that, however I'm not getting very far in that process as I am already well connected - That doesn't really answer the question though.

Due to a glitch on sale at Tesco for £49.99 (Briefly) There is a probability that Tesco will not honour those orders.

Thanks FE coming from you it really looks like I really am going to enjoy it, as having a laptop had give me the feeling that do I really need an IPAD as well, but as you say they are more mobile and I am certainly looking forward to it though.

"....seems expensive but we need to get all the good experiences in that we can."

I can almost guarantee that you will be delighted with your present. It does seem expensive - in fact it is, let's be honest - but it is without a doubt the best portable device I have ever owned, and I've owned a few in my time.

YES, mine arrives 3rd April. Some of my family have got the ipad2 even a grand child still in primary school and they have all said its a very different and good experience, so mrs ventad decided to get me the new one for my 70th good on her, seems expensive but we need to get all the good experiences in that we can.

I blame a hotel overseas that I stayed at. I was offered an iPad to read the digital edition of The Times (no UK papers available). I was hooked!

I blame the FE, when he said that he was buying an iPad2 I thought that I should investigate. Liked it, bought it and absolutely delighted with it. I have no intention of upgrading, do not see the need, but if mine went kaput I would get another. Only use mine at home so the cheapest was my choice though I try not to think about the price. Mind you, at my age, I am always trying to ignore the price of things especially when I fill my wife's real Mini with petrol every six months.

Kevscar - You don't have to hold it to use it, especially using the smart cover which makes a small stand, and it is easy to use with one hand. I did all of this one handed.

not a lot of good if you only have the use of one hand.

"....just could not think of a good use for one and a good reason to buy one."

I think a lot of people share your view. A lot don't, however.

In the last two years Apple has sold over 55 million iPads, and sales appear to be accelerating - 15 million of those were sold in the past three months.

By anyone's standards the iPad has so far been a phenomenal success, and it looks set to continue on the same course; I'm sure that the company will sell millions of the new version within a few months of its introduction. No other Tablet has even come near to the iPad in terms of units sold.

I looked at them in the Apple store, but just could not think of a good use for one and a good reason to buy one. The small 'netbooks' like the Samsung N145 look better value to me, but I am probably wrong!

No plans to buy as I think this model is just a go between. Perhaps if they bring out another soon with more memory plus more importantly a USB port I might buy when I'm overseas. Without the 20% VAt it is just about worth it.

Memory is not an issue for me. The great advantage is its portability and ease of use. It fires up instantly, has a good battery life and I would not consider a netbook instead. The drawback is price.

Yesterday, I saw a 'lil ol' lady' whip out an ipad lookalike, on the bus, and I thought to myself... I might be doing the same thing in twenty years' time...if I'm lucky!

This will please Apple - so far 7 votes polled, with 100% No.

Personally I really can't see a use for one, I have a laptop for general home use, a desktop PC for when more grunt is required on a job, a netbook for catching on Facebook etc in bed or when travelling, and an Android phone for general surfing on the move.

Only if you can get me a 50% discount.

I was thinking of getting one but thought that it was a bit on the expensive side for me.

Would probably have to hide it from the other half if I still wanted to live.

So looks like a No from me,But you never know.
