All the PC's in the building I work in have the USB drives disabled as well as the CD/DVD drives. Internet access is only permitted on certain user accounts via a password and username that only certain employees have access to. When logging on the internet a screen comes up detailing, in a pretty vague way, that all internet traffic can be monitored. Hotmail accounts are impossible to access - not tried gmail yet. I understand 'questionable' sites are blocked by Head Office. Facebook is accessible. From what I gather the time the access is gained is heavily monitored as we have an hour and a half 'downtime' starting at about 4. If the net is accessed at any other time, questions are asked 'very strongly'.....

At the place where I work we have a security policy and you have to read it and take an online exam. The results are retained by the IT department and any transgression is a disciplinary offence. It's all pretty much common sense really. By the way, it is the NHS and I'm a contractor working in the NHS, but I'm still expected to comply with their policies as expected because I'm using their network and potentially have access to patient records, particularly on LANs.

All of my previous employers in the last few years have been extremely active in publishing and educating in company security policy. Inevitably, a lot of employees choose to 'bypass' policy where it can save time, for example emailing data out to suppliers.

Our is strict

After a quite high profile spying case in our industry a few years ago, our company has a very strict rules all employees sign a declaration to say they have read and understood. A lot of Webb sites are blocked including Webb based e-mails and Face book etc. Noldi

In my experience

many companies barely have a security policy, never mind reminding staff about it. I have seen security holes big enough to drive a 747 through - some of them in pretty large businesses. Not long ago I was called to a legal firm to advise after a 'breach of security', only to find there was no security - one person was plugging memory sticks into a company computer and downloading music. Someone else had used a portable USB drive to steal legal research data. The thing is,in this forum we talk endlessly about computer security issues because we're all interested. Out there in the real world lots and lots of people have little or no idea about data security, because nobody teaches them.
