My TomTom lives out of sight on the parcel shelf. I find the display very distracting if it's within my field of view, so I just rely on the voice.

Detour Function + Waymarks Function = no probs!
Had same experience as you when we had flooding in Berkshire a while ago.

Give me a map any day!
A couple of years ago during 'the floods' I was driving from Coventry to Swindon on that very wet friday afternoon. Although it took me 6 hours, the only reason it was so quick was because i had a map in the car and was able to plot a route avoiding areas likely to be flooded, and replot routes where I came accross unexpected deep water.
I drove over 120 miles to get home, but made it with no problems.
Try using sat nav for that!

I have a built in sat nav with the car (Toyota). I rarely use it ( annoying voice!) and occasionally it has taken me on narrow country lanes etc.The menu takes a lot of getting used to. Also, unfortunately, it is combined with a DVD player and an FM radio - I am extremely annoyed about the decision to switch off FM as I keep my cars from new for about 10 years.
