Opinion: Windows 8 puts us all on the take
Windows 8 will encourage us all to embrace the web. But cloud computing is setting itself up for a fall by its very dependence on the internet. If you can’t access your apps, how will you use them?

Opinion: Tablet or Netbook? How to Choose the Right Mobile Tech
Tablets, netbooks, smartphones--these days, you can't buy a microwave without being upsold on the 4G, touchscreen, app-store model. But when you're picking out your preferred mobile tech for work (or even for play), you can't rely on a features chart or a list of specs to tell you what you should buy. That's why I decided to try working from the road with three different gadget combinations--a netbook with a smartphone, a Google Chrome OS CR-48 with a "dumb" phone, and an iPad with a dumb phone--to see which arrangement worked best for my needs and my budget.

Opinion: How a news junkie uses the iPad
I’m a news junkie. I love remaining informed about U.S. and world news, technology news, entertainment news, you name it. I don’t subscribe to a single newspaper, though, and I don’t watch the news on television. All of my news comes from the Internet, and the vast majority of that news, I consume on my iPad.

Opinion: Microsoft May Build Its Own Windows 8 Tablet
Microsoft is reportedly considering plans to build its own Windows 8-based tablet in partnership with Texas Instruments and hardware manufacturers in Taiwan. The rumored Microsoft-branded tablet would be available by the end of 2012. The move would be a response to the success of Apple's iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad, as well as Android-based tablets and smartphones from Google and its manufacturing partners. To create its tablet competitor, Microsoft plans to "copy its branding strategy" from products such as the Xbox 360, Kin and Zune, according to Taiwan-based DigiTimes.

iCloud may not seem as exciting as a new smartphone or tablet, but it may guarantee that I buy a new iPhone when my current one dies.

Opinion: Kid Sells Kidney for iPad 2, Regrets Transaction
So, the iPad 2 is a pretty cool device, right? What would you be willing to do to get your hands on one? Pay someone $900 to stand in line for three days? Shell out $13,500 because it's sold out? Maybe even sell your kidney?

Opinion: Asus Padfone, MeeGo-Based Eee PC Expand Choices
The product announcements are coming fast and furious from the trade show floor at Computex in Taipei, including a virtual sea of tablets. There are a number of interesting contenders in there, to be sure, but two new offerings from Asus--my favorite hardware maker--strike me as being particularly rich with possibilities.

Opinion: Intel Shrugs at Tablets Messing Up PC, Notebook Sales
Intel would happily make custom chips for Apple and other rivals, its CFO said Thursday, but hinted that the company doesn't believe the Apple iPad and similar tablets will make much of a dent in laptop sales and thus Intel's core processor business.

Opinion: Hold the half-baked hardware
How much should you pay for a laptop? And how much do you want to fork out? The latter is probably a lot less than the figure you mentally answered in response to my first question, but the correlation between the two is important.

Bad news, hackers: It looks like the honeymoon with Android is over. As Android Central points out, rooted devices are being blocked from renting movies from the Android Marketplace. Opinion: Apple takes the wraps off new retail efforts
If I asked most of my friends what they were up to early on a Sunday morning, I imagine answers would range from “having brunch” to “going to church” or “I was asleep—why on Earth are you calling me before 1PM?” Admittedly, I usually practice similar habits, but on this particular Sunday morning. This Sunday saw the launch of what bloggers have taken to calling “Apple Store 2.0,” Apple’s revamped retail experience.
