Haol (on the PC Advisor forums) asks: I have been reading your blog and I see that you have worked for some very large companies. What I wanted to know is what antivirus and firewalls do you see on most networks? Also do you think Windows Vista will be a solid OS? Finally, have you worked with any hackers?

Pete responds:

All corporates these days deploy firewalls and often multiple brands of antivirus – one at the email gateway and another on the desktop. Many also have Intrusion Detection Systems, in an effort to identify and block attempted break-ins. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to mention specific products.

As you may know, the release of Vista has been postponed until early 2007, presumably for quality assurance reasons. Many large companies prefer to wait a year or so following a major release of operating system, allowing time for teething troubles to be addressed and the platform stabilised.

I and colleagues have 'hacked' hundreds of systems, but at the owners' request.
