Happy New Year

It's been a while since I blogged atchya, and I apologise for that, but I've been relaxing with the family and enjoying the festive season, as I hope you all have. I'm feeling a touch overweight and the thought of turkey, sprouts and stuffing is making me feel a little bit ill, but I'm also well rested and ready for the year ahead.

Anyway, enough of that. I'm here with worrying news: there's a vulnerability in versions of Windows from 98 to XP. Trouble is, Microsoft haven't got a patch yet, though there is one available. Here's our report.

I've had some additional information sent to me by Kaspersky Labs. It recommends that you should not open any file with a .wmf extension – sensible if somewhat obvious advice – and don't think you're safe just because you use Firefox rather than IE.

Kaspersky offers more advice here.

And this is what Microsoft has to say about it.

But this is not an official Microsoft patch – it's been creatred by Ilfak Guilfanov and is available from his website.

Now, as it's an unofficial patch I'd like to point out that it's not me who is recommending that you use it, but researchers at the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Center.

That is all – for now.
