EyeFly film adds glasses-free 3D to your iPhone 5

This EyeFly screen protector brings glasses-free 3D to the iPhone 5.

Phone manufacturers have turned their attention from 3D technology to HD screen development. But if you still want to watch Avatar on the go in all its 3D glory, there are ways to make your smartphone screen display 3D content without wearing a pair of silly glasses.

Two Singaporean research institutes, Temasek Polytechnic and A*Star, have developed a nano-engineered screen protector that turns ordinary mobile screens into 3D displays. The companies are calling their EyeFly 3D the first ever glasses-free 3D accessory that can display content in both portrait and landscape mode.

The screen film itself measures less than 0.1 millimeter thick and it's lined with nearly "half a million perfectly shaped lenses." The underlying technology behind the EyeFly 3D is a lenticular lens system, which displays an image though an array of magnifying glasses to produce the illusion of depth.

It's not quite the cheapest 3D add-on that's been produced for phones. But the companies behind EyeFly 3D also promise to deliver a 3D-viewing app that will convert all your 2D images into depth-filled pictures. The team is also planning to release an SDK that will enable game developers to convert their existing games into 3D versions.

We'll have to see it to believe it, but if you want to try it yourself, you can preorder the EyeFly 3D for about $40 for an expected delivery date of April 27. For now the film has only been developed specifically for iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod Touches, but protectors for the fourth-generation iPad and Samsung Galaxy S4 are in development.
