HTC Evo One Details Leaked Before Today's Sprint Launch

Sprint and HTC gear up to reveal a new smartphone, but a mysterious phone dubbed the Evo One hits the Internet rumor mill.

At Mobile World Congress last month, I got an early look at HTC's new One line of smartphones. The best of the three, the One X, is rumored to be coming to Sprint under the carrier's Evo brand of phones. So, when Sprint and HTC announced that they would be holding a joint press conference this month, I had a pretty good idea of what would be announced. See also HTC One X review.

However, those ninjas at Droid Life somehow got their hands on Sprint's version of the One X ahead of the press event. According to the blog, the HTC Evo One has a 4.7-inch, high-resolution display, the same as the European version of the HTC One X. A lot about the phone appears to be the same as its European counterpart: The Android 4.0 operating system with HTC Sense 4.0, an 8-megapixel camera, and a front-facing camera.

Interestingly, according to Droid Life's photos at least, the Evo One will also have a kickstand, which will be familiar to those who have owned Sprint HTC Evo phones before. Kickstands are handy if you want to watch video on your airplane's tray table or use your phone as a digital photo frame. It isn't really an essential feature, in my opinion, but I like that Sprint is keeping some design consistency across its phones.

Quad-Core or Dual-Core?

The big question here is whether the Evo One will have an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor like the international version of the One X or a dual-core Qualcomm S4 chip such as the one used by the U.S. AT&T version of the phone. PCWorld reported in February, when those phones debuted, that NVIDIA's processor wasn't yet compatible with LTE radio chipsets. Since Sprint is making a big push with its LTE network, I'm guessing that the HTC Evo One will also have the dual-core S4 processor so the carrier can advertise it as an LTE phone.

We'll find out exactly what Sprint and HTC are up to later today. The event will start 2:30PM PT/5:30PM ET. PCWorld will be there, so stay tuned for a full hands-on report and photos from the event.
