HTC's 'Omega' Windows Phone: An Early Look

A pair of HTC handsets are expected to debut next week as the first widely available Mango phones.

HTC is expected to introduce its first Windows Phone "Mango" handsets at a press event next week, but an official photo and details for one of the phones, the HTC Omega, have already leaked out.

The HTC Omega reportedly has a 3.8-inch display, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor (single-core, most likely), 512 MB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a front-facing camera. In a photo posted by PocketNow, the Omega sports an aluminum-on-white design that actually looks a lot like HTC's Flyer Android tablet. When the phone is released, it may be called the HTC Radar.

HTC is also said to be preparing a high-end Windows Phone handset codenamed Eternity, with a 4.7-inch display. The Eternity will also reportedly have a 1.5 GHz processor, as WMPowerUser pointed out back in May.

Microsoft has provided lots of details on Mango. The OS update, due this fall, is more like an overhaul, with features like multitasking, Internet Explorer 9, speech-to-text, and Facebook messaging integration.

But all's been quiet on the hardware front, at least officially, with the exception of a Fujitsu phone that's launching only in Japan. Nokia is planning to launch a Windows Phone codenamed "Sea Ray" this year, and more hardware is expected from Acer, Samsung, and LG. HTC has a press event scheduled for September 1, and is rumored to spend the entire time talking about Windows Phone. If that's the case, expect other hardware makers to follow up with their own announcements shortly thereafter. (Also see Windows Phone 7 Mango: A Visual Tour of the New Features.")
