Man chokes on $85,000 mobile bill

Apple's iPhone now looks attractive

If you thought Apple's iPhone charges were high, spare a thought for the man who just got an $85,000 (£41,000) mobile phone bill.

22-year-old Canadian Piotr Staniaszek reckoned he could use his new phone as a modem for his PC under his new $10 "unlimited" mobile browser plan from Bell Mobility.

He merrily downloaded high-def movies and other massive files oblivious that this high-end Net use would incur massive extra charges.

Staniaszek normally pays about $150 a month for his phone, and would sometimes have his line cut if his bill was $100 over plan.

This time no one called, and his bill rocketed to $85,000.

Bell Mobility has lowered the bill to $3,243 in a "goodwill gesture" to match the best data plan available for using mobile phones as a modem.

This makes Apple's £35/month with unlimited data downloads suddenly look a very good deal indeed – although try downloading movies to your iPhone and await your 02 bill with terror.
