HP Launches Its First Ultrabook, the $900 HP Folio

HP's first ultrabook, a 13.3-inch super-thin laptop dubbed the HP Folio, officially joined the ultrabook fray.

HP's first ultrabook, a 13.3-inch super-thin laptop dubbed the HP Folio, officially joined the ultrabook fray Wednesday, with more business-oriented features and a longer battery life than the competition so far.

Like other ultrabooks, the HP Folio is all about being stylishly thin.

According to Ritchie's Room, which leaked photos and specs of the ultrabook on Tuesday, the HP Folio is basically the HP DM3 ultraslim laptop on a diet: It's 0.71 inches thick, with a 3.28-pound weight. (The DM3, by comparison, weighs in at 4.2 pounds and measures 0.96 inches thick.)

Although it's not the thinnest or lightest ultrabook announced to date, HP's press release on Wednesday reveals the company's hopes that the Folio will win over business users (and their IT departments) with options like a TPM embedded security chip for email and hard drive protection and USB 2.0 dock.

The HP Folio's 9 hours of battery life, the highest available among Ultrabooks to date, might also appeal to all types of mobile users, not just corporate jetsetters.

For a competitive starting price of $900 (on par with the Toshiba Portege Z835 and the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabooks), the HP Folio offers a Core i5-2467M processor, 4GB of memory, 126GB solid state drive, and an array of connectivity ports including Ethernet and USB 3.0. In typical HP fashion, the HP Folio will be configurable with other Intel processors and Windows 7 Professional instead of the starting configuration's Windows Home Premium.

Will enterprises embrace the ultrabook concept and spring for HP's Ultrabook for their mobile professionals? That's still to be determined, but if you're interested in the Folio for yourself, you can pick one up from HP starting December 7.
