Apple Safari 4 beta is a Beautiful browser

Apple's Safari browser has had a makeover and is now Beautiful. And smart. It's not smart enough for Apple to include a grammar-checker for its marketing, it seems.

The 25.5MB download, announced today, offers users a glimpse of the web with most frequently-visited sites served up as live, visual thumbnails known as Top Sites. In this sense, it's a lot like the Google Chrome browser. It's prettier though.

However, in typical Apple style, the browser is visually compelling as well as being clean, uncluttered and easy to navigate. Apple has mimicked the Cover Flow scrolling library of content found in iTunes and on its iPods and iPhone, making for a seamless matching up of Apple's best-selling product line.

Beyond the pretty exterior, Apple says the updated web browser will be the fastest and "most innovative" web client around.

Its press release states: "The Nitro engine in Safari 4 runs JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3".

"Safari 4 is the fastest and most efficient browser for Mac and Windows, with great integration of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards that enables the next generation of interactive web applications," proclaims Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing.

Check back for an Apple Safari 4 beta review shortly. With luck, Microsoft might usher Internet Explorer 8.0 out the door in the coming days.
