Is Gmail down? Turn to Twitter

Ever wondered whether your favourite website is actually down, or whether it's just an isolated problem at your end?

Well, there's one way you can do a quick survey of millions of users - Twitter. Twitter allows you to run searches on any term to find out whether other users are tweeting about your particular area of interest.

For instance, I couldn't get into my Gmail account this morning - so ran the search ‘Gmail down' on Twitter. See below for the results.

Given that PCA has only just started using this micro-blogging phenomenon (follow us here), it's likely I'm late to the game with this - and it's clearly not the killer feature that will finally convince Twitter sceptics to register an account.

But a quick search allows anyone (account holder or not) to get near-instance feedback on the views of millions - scooping news aggregators in many instances.
