Housewives spend nearly half their free time online

British housewives are swapping their traditional coffee mornings and gossiping sessions in favour of surfing the web.

According to the Digital World, Digital Life survey by TNS, UK housewives spend 47 percent of their free time surfing the web. That's even more than students, who spend 39 percent of their free time online. The unemployed admit to accessing the net for 32 percent of their spare time.

The survey found that the majority of time was spent looking for information, banking and reading news websites, although watching clips on YouTube and bidding for goods on auction sites are also popular pastimes. However, only 8 percent of those surveyed admitted to spending their net time frequenting dating websites and only 7 percent said they contribute to blogs.

"By spending productive time online, we are actually making more time for leisure," said Arno Hummerston, managing director of TNS Global Interactive.
