Hollyoaks and Girls Aloud to star in online soaps

Not content with monopolising the tea-time TV slot, Channel 4 teen soap 'Hollyoaks' now has the internet in its sights and plans to launch an online soap opera.

According to the BBC, Hollyoaks characters will be seen talking about and watching clips of Runners – an online soap opera based around a group of students working as runners in fashion and the entertainment industry, during episodes.

Fans of the Chester-based soap will also be able to keep up-to-date with Runners themselves by logging on to the Hollyoaks website to view regular three-minute episodes. It's also thought Runners will be available through Bebo, MSN Messenger TV, Facebook and iTunes.

The online soap opera will start a 10-week run early next year while a weekly 15-minute summary episode is also expected to air on TV, most likely following the Hollyoaks' Sunday omnibus.

Pop band Girls Aloud are also thought to be turning their attentions to web-based entertainment by staring in online soap 'The Secret World of Sam King'.

The Daily Star claims the soap, which will initially be for Bebo users, has been created by Universal Records and will follow record label post-room boy Sam King as he secretly manages new bands from an office at the back of a stationery cupboard.

Razorlight, Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Katherine Jenkins, The Feeling and Bloc Party are among the stars also signed to Universal, tipped for cameos in the soap.

A Universal Records insider said: "Girls Aloud are one of our biggest acts, and, along with others, will be making a tongue-in-cheek debut in Sam King. The girls love stuff like Bebo and are really looking forward to filming."

However, we can't help but wonder if the Hollyoaks cast and Girls Aloud have considered the effect Bebo-backed online soap Kate Modern had on Ralf Little's career?
