PlayStation 3 Firmware Update Turns 4.00, Adds Vita Support

Sony's PS3 flips over to firmware 4.00, but you'll probably only care if you live in Japan.

Everyone ready for the PlayStation Vita's launch in just a few weeks? Well get on over to your PlayStation 3, download the new milestone 4.00 firmware, then get ready to sync your...oh wait, wrong country. See also PS4 release date, specs and rumour round-up.

If you live in Japan, it's almost time to celebrate--December 17's the magic number. If you're in the U.S., you can still download the 4.00 firmware, but you'll have to wait almost three months for the privilege of linking with Sony's upcoming powerhouse portable.

Sony's says the 4.00 firmware's designed to support the PS Vita's launch in Japan, prepping the PS3 to "serve as a content management device." It'll let VIta owners transfer digital content, e.g. games, music, photos, and videos, between the Vita and PS3. It'll also let back up Vita games on the PS3's hard drive or update the Vita using the PS3's network features. (I'm not sure about that last "feature"--isn't the Vita just as capable of doing that solo?)

Other 4.00 changes that aren't Vita-specific include giving PlayStation Plus members the option to fiddle automatic updates for game patches, system software, recommend games and videos, and sync trophy info. The update also adds settings "for filtering friend requests and messages."

I think user MUGEN02 sums it up best in the comments to Sony's blog post on the matter: "So in other words 4.0 does nothing new." Nothing to speak of if you live in the U.S., that is, though that'll only seem odd to anyone (okay, most of you) that associate major overhauls with base number sequencing.
