Opinion: Gmail Tips: Preview Messages, Insert Images, and More
For a while now I've been stuck using my Web browser to access my Gmail accounts, rather than using Microsoft Outlook as I prefer. (It's all because of the computer meltdown I mentioned last week.) Gmail's Web interface gets the job done, but there's one thing about it that drives me nuts: no preview pane.

Opinion: WWDC Keynote: Rumor Roundup
Rumors are flying about what Apple has in store for its users Monday when the company shows off the next versions of OS X and iOS 5, and iCloud, a new online service. Apple set off a rumor feeding frenzy Tuesday after the company announced that CEO Steve Jobs and a cast of Apple executives would introduce the three new products during the keynote for the company's Worldwide Developers Conference.

Opinion: US Government Embraces Consumerization of IT
The agencies of the United States government, under the guidance of CIO Vivek Kundra, are adapting to the consumerization of IT and letting users make their own technology decisions. Unfortunately for RIM, it seems that users are not choosing BlackBerry, which has previously been dictated as the government standard.

Opinion: Apple Confirms iCloud Launch for WWDC
Apple Tuesday morning confirmed that it will launch an online service called iCloud next week, about as much of a solid preview as one can ever get from the always-secretive Apple.

Opinion: Increase the Number of Visible Messages in Gmail
The other day I told you how to show only unread messages in your Gmail inbox. Part of the reasoning behind that was that older unread mail would often get forced "off the page" by newer messages, thus increasing the chances of it getting overlooked.

Opinion: Day 25: Don't Lose Your Google Docs Data
Now that I have spent the last 24 days prolifically cranking out 30 Days With...Google Docs blog posts and feature articles on various subjects, I have a fair amount of content built up in Google Docs. So, the question I inevitably ask myself is "hey, what happens if Google crashes and my data disappears?"

Opinion: Day 24: Google Docs Drawing vs. Microsoft Visio
There is another tool buried in Google Docs that we haven't yet looked at during our 30 Days With...Google Docs--Drawing. The Microsoft Office equivalent, or counterpart, would be Visio, although Visio is an additional purchase that is not part of the Microsoft Office bundles.

Opinion: Amazon's Servers Overwhelmed by Gaga Lady Gaga Fans
A crush of Lady Gaga fans hit Amazon like a platform stiletto to the gut, overwhelming the company's servers. In an apparent promotion for Amazon's Cloud Drive service, users were invited to download the pop star's much-anticipated new album, "Born This Way," for only 99 cents and qualify for an upgrade to 20 GB of cloud storage - which usually costs $20 a year or comes with a full-price album purchase.

Opinion: eProductivity Stand-Alone Brings GTD to Lotus Notes
It's been years since I was last forced to use Lotus Notes as my primary business e-mail system, and I don't miss it. But I still know more than a few professionals who depend on Notes for the bulk of their daily business communications, calendar tracking, and other essential work stuff. If you're a Notes user interested in bringing GTD to your inbox, eProductivity is definitely worth a look.

Opinion: Is Open Source Up to Par? Just Ask the DoD
Last week provided a significant boost to open source software in the form of survey results suggesting that such technologies have now become a norm in the business world. Now, in what's perhaps an even bigger blow to proprietary vendors, none other than the Department of Defense has weighed in with its own support for open technology.

Opinion: Day 22: What If You Can't Connect to Google Docs?
We have gotten through three weeks of 30 Days With...Google Docs. We are entering the home stretch of the project, and we haven't addressed one of the most crucial questions to ask when considering Google Docs--what do you do when you can't connect to Google Docs?

Worried that dangers may be lurking in an HTML e-mail you've received in Microsoft Outlook? The free PocketKnife Peek lets you see that e-mail in plain text, without any potential HTML dangers such as malicious scripts. And you can use the program to examine other parts of the e-mail as well.

Opinion: Connecting Reverse Logistics, Recycling, Sustainability
Just recently, IDC's David Daoud released a report on the staggering weight of PCs and related devices and accessories recycled in the United States in 2010. (For Earth Day, IDC has posted a free version of this document with registration.) The total weight amounted to about 8 lb per capita or a total weight of 2.5 billion pounds in 2010 (2,506,659,212lb). We're talking about PCs (about 44% of the total), PC displays (27%), multifunction peripherals (about 15%), and the remainder primarily from mobile phone devices, x86 servers, digital cameras, nonenterprise storage, keyboards, mice, and cables.

Opinion: Supply Chain in the Cloud - Looking Beyond TCO
I have had a significant number of conversations recently about cloud, and how it applies specifically to the supply chain. OK, not all that surprising, after all, along with mobility, cloud is very much at the apex of the hype cycle. Yet if one looks beyond the hype, cloud offers the potential to not only transform how supply chain organizations procure IT capabilities, but also to fundamentally change how they manage business processes. Certainly I do not wish to 'over-egg' the omelet here, or suggest that this will happen tomorrow, but it is coming -- and perhaps faster than we might appreciate.

Opinion: Warranty Capability Model Published
Last week was a big week in Warranty. IDC Manufacturing Insights not only published the Warranty Management Capability Maturity Model, but we held a webcast entitled "The Way to Becoming a Warranty Warrior" which described the details of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and also reviewed the industry field study results which showed the clear separation in maturity markers of the leaders, or "Warranty Warriors" from the laggards, or "Warranty Wannabees".

Opinion: Retail IT Vendors Pay Attention
In a new retail end user primary research conducted between January and April 2011, we assessed MEA retail IT directions in great detail. During the analysis of the survey findings we were astonished in seeing such a dynamic market in MEA, which we are sure many IT vendors will not want to miss!

Opinion: Inspired Brands Transforming For the New Retail Paradigm
I am hearing a whole lot about inspired brands lately. At the Apparel Tech West Conference last week in Los Angeles, Jim Crawford, GREC Executive Director, gave a presentation titled, The Race to Embrace Consumer Mobile Apps. While everyone is talking about mobile apps in retail today, Crawford's presentation was very well grounded in what retailers and consumers around the world are already doing. I agree wholeheartedly with his claims that as consumers become savvier to the wily marketing tactics of retailers, and as products are more commoditized, the retail winners of the future, particularly if they aren't the best low priced operator, will be the most inspired brands. Everything these inspired retailers will do will reflect their brand image.

Opinion: Supply Chain Segmentation in Retail
Supply Chain segmentation is not new, despite recent articles to the contrary, as manufacturing companies have explored ways to manage parts of the supply chain differently for the varied requirements of product lines or categories for decades. What is perhaps new, is the interest on the part of Retail, driven in large part by the growth of private label.
