Nook Color App Store Hits 1 Million Downloads in a Week

Barnes & Noble's Nook app store reaches the million-download milestone despite a small starting selection.

Barnes & Noble announced Monday that he Nook Color App Store has reached the 1 million-download milestone. While that isn't much compared to the Android Marketplace or Apple's App Store, it's important to remember that the Nook Color accomplished this feat with a limited selection of apps and within just one week after the Barnes & Noble rolled out its over-the-air software update to its e-readers, allowing users to download additional apps.

The original announcement made it seem as if these apps would all relate to the device's use as an e-reader, but the top selling apps for the store tell a different story. The top five apps for the Nook app store in the first week included Drawing Pad, Solitaire, Astraware Mahjong and of course Angry Birds.

When PCWorld first got our hands on the Nook Color late last year we found a lot to like, but we couldn't totally get behind Barnes & Noble's e-reader effort due to problems with the device's software. But with B&N's announcement of its own app store and the addition of Flash support, the Nook Color is starting to look less like just another e-reader and, at $250, more like the best entry level-tablet on the market.
