Christmas miss list

What’s top of the Christmas wish list in your household? E-commerce giant Amazon already thinks it knows, having announced its top 10 gift predictions just in time to give you eight weeks to place your order before the big day.

The list is littered with the obvious candidates for your friends and family – the newest video iPod, Nintendo’s Wii console, Microsoft Office Student and Teacher edition… Hang on, Microsoft Office Student and Teacher edition? Surely that would be about as welcome as a pair of auntie’s knitted woollen socks in anyone’s Christmas stockings?

Quite apart from the fact that it sticks out like a sore thumb among Amazon’s list of Christmas must-haves - which also includes a Little Britain DVD, a Jamie Oliver cookbook and a Deal or No Deal board game - it would also make a better suggestion for a bargain clearance sale than a Christmas wish list. Its replacement – Office Home and Student 2007 – is just around the corner, and the new version doesn’t come with the restriction that it can only be purchased by students and educators, as does its predecessor.

Our advice: stick to the iPod.
