Windows 8 Store reaches 20,000 apps

Global Windows Store app totals rise but still lacks quality

Microsoft Surface RT tablet

Microsoft's Windows Store for Windows 8 has hit the 20,000 app mark.

Although Microsoft hasn't published the numbers itself, Win App Update on Twitter said the total had been reached last week. The global Windows Store now has over 20,000 apps available.

According to The Next Web, the landmark was achieved by added nearly 8,000 apps to the Windows Store over the course of two weeks. Win App Update says that around 87 percent of the apps available are free, accounting for around 18,000 apps.

Not all apps in the Windows Store are available in every region and language. In the UK, at the time of writing, the Windows Store on our Windows 8 desktop has just over 10,500 apps.

Microsoft may be increasing the amount of apps in the Windows Store at a good rate. However, the problem we've found, as discussed in our Surface RT review, is a lack of quality big name apps which you would expect to find.

Key missing apps include Spotify, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, BBC iPlayer, IMDb and more.
