Leeds and Bradford get free WiFi

The network access provided is part of the government's "super connected city" initiative

Public areas of Leeds and Bradford are to get free access to WiFi through a network supplied by Virgin Media Business.

The network access provided is part of the government's "super connected city" initiative.

Virgin Media Business is working with partner Global Reach Technology to provide the WiFi access, which will be supported by Virgin's fibre network.

The first locations to benefit from the service are Briggate in Leeds and Bridge Street in Bradford, followed by Millennium Square in Leeds and City Park in Bradford early in 2013.

Councillor Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council, said: "Leeds is leading the way in ensuring that our infrastructure is in place to make the most of future digital developments and we are pleased that our neighbours Bradford are also supporting the regional push for super-fast broadband."

Councillor David Green, council leader of Bradford, said: "The super connected city initiative means a great deal for Bradford as we are a growing city with a big economy, and the initiative will give existing local companies a greater competitive edge in national and global markets."

O2 and Three mobile customers are missing out on free full WiFi on the London Underground. Virgin Media has signed a wholesale connectivity deal with Vodafone and EE to support their customers on its fibre network that supports the Tube WiFi network.
