Vodafone UK site down

Vodafone UK website 404 error

Vodafone's UK website (vodafone.co.uk) has been down most of this morning, and was reportedly out of action for long periods yesterday.

Vodafone's usually chatty @VodafoneUK Twitter staff have been strangely silent through the morning. One Vodafone UK customer compalined on Twitter that she hasn't been able to log-on to her account "for three days".

Update: Vodafone UK website now back up after morning's outage.

Vodafone's other international websites appear to be unaffected.

The 404 error message on Vodafone's site reads:

Error 404--Not Found

From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:

10.4.5 404 Not Found

The server has not found anything matching the Request-URI. No indication is given of whether the condition is temporary or permanent.

If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 403 (Forbidden) can be used instead. The 410 (Gone) status code SHOULD be used if the server knows, through some internally configurable mechanism, that an old resource is permanently unavailable and has no forwarding address.

The website monitoring service IsItDownRightNow reports that the site was down yesterday evening from about 6pm,

"Probably the server is overloaded, down or unreachable because of a network problem, outage or a website maintenance is in progress," suggests the monitoring site.

"We are making some changes to the site," explained Vodafone. When challenged by The Register about why maintenance work was carried out in the middle of the day, the mobile carrier replied: "This planned maintenance involved us needing to load test new systems. While traditionally maintenance is done very early in the morning, we needed to carry out this work in a ‘live’ environment. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
