Video: The Byte - Megaupload, Dell 4Q, SMS revenue decline, Latitude Leaderboards

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, who faces large scale copyright infringement charges, was granted bail after a judge deemed him a low flight risk.  Dotcom will return home, but his whereabouts and financial activity will be closely monitored until his extradition hearing in July.


Dell's fourth quarter earnings were heavily impacted by weak PC sales as well as pricing and supply issues caused by the floods in Thailand.  The company said it expects revenue to decline about 7 percent for the first fiscal quarter of 2013.


SMS revenue is declining as more people turn to alternate services like WhatsApp and Blackberry Messenger.  Operators worldwide saw an estimated 13.9 billion dollar decline in revenue last year as smartphone users are preferring these apps to potentially avoid SMS charges.


A new feature for Google Maps will allow users to check in, receive points, and compete on a leaderboard much like Foursquare.  The service, called Latitude Leaderboards, may link to Google+ in the near future. For now, it's only available to Android users.
