RIM to slash 2,000 jobs

Cuts follow fall in profit

Research in Motion (RIM), manufacturer of BlackBerry devices, has revealed it will slash 2,000 jobs.

The cuts will see 11 percent of the firm’s Canadian workforce laid-off after the tech firm said its profits from February to Mach this were $695m, down from $769m the previous year and well below the estimated levels.

Furthermore, RIM had slashed its profit expectations for the rest of the year. The company blamed reduced shipments of its BlackBerry smartphones.

The company also said Chief operating officer Don Morrison will retire with Thorsten Heins replacing him.

Further details about the job cuts are expected on on September 15 when the firm will reveal its second quarter results.
