Microsoft to launch Surface 2 tablets on 23 September

New Surface 2 tablets with Windows 8.1 and new accessories coming this month

Surface 2 launch event

Microsoft is set to launch its Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets on 23 September.

The software giant and now hardware maker has sent out invitations to a Surface event where it is expected to unveil the second generation of its Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets. The Surface launch will take place on 23 September in New York.

Aside from the replacements for the existing Surface models, The Verge has been told that Microsoft will not be launching a Surface mini which has been rumoured.

The Surface 2 will succeed the Surface RT with Microsoft dropping the 'RT' part of the name despite the tablet supposedly coming with Windows 8.1 RT. The Surface 2 is thought to feature a Full HD screen and an nVidia Tegra 4 processor.

A Surface Pro 2 will gain an Intel Haswell (fourth-generation) processor and will ship with 8 GB of RAM. The Haswell chip will allegedly improve battery life by a couple of hours. Each Surface 2 tablet will also feature a two-stage kickstand this time around, presumable for different viewing angles.

Microsoft is also expected to launch new Surface accessories which will arrive in new colours, according to a leaked slide. A Power Cover will be the star of the show with an additional battery so that the tablets can keep going for longer away from a power source. A docking station is also thought to be among the new additions.

We'll make sure to bring you all the specs, price, release dates and other details for the Surface 2 tablets later this month.
