Tesco to launch an own-brand tablet

Tesco wants to take on Apple, Amazon and Google with a tablet

Tablets group

Tesco is allegedly preparing to enter the tablet market with its own device.

The supermarket giant is set to jump into the busy and competitive tablet market with an own-brand offering. The Times said Tesco is ready to 'ambush' rivals including Apple and Amazon with its tablet as it 'fights to win back shoppers in its British heartland'.

The report says that the tablet will likely go on sale in time for Christmas and will include pre-loaded books, films and music. Tesco will also install apps for online grocery shopping, banking products and its streaming service, Blinkbox.

The release timing will put it direct competition with the new Nexus 7 from Google and the expected iPad mini 2 from Apple. Not to mention an updated line-up of Kindle Fire tablets from online retailer Amazon.

Pricing isn't confirmed but sources suggest the Tesco tablet will match the cheapest Kindle Fire in quality which sells for £129. We hope Tesco doesn't give it the 'value' branding but a cheap price would make sense as a way to point consumers in the direction of its growing digital portfolio.

"The move is aimed at repelling the advances of Apple and Amazon, which have wreaked havoc with Tesco’s profitable books and DVDs business in recent years. The supermarket is also hoping to find new ways to connect with shoppers who have become less loyal since the downturn put a strain on food budgets." said The Times.
