As expected, Apple has introduced a smaller version of its popular iPad. The iPad Mini has a 7.9in screen compared to 9.7in and will take on, among others, Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire.

Philip Schiller, senior vice president at Apple, said: “iPad mini is every inch an iPad. With its gorgeous 7.9-inch display, iPad mini features the same number of pixels as the original iPad and iPad 2, so you can run more than 275,000 apps designed specifically for iPad.”

Apple's iPad Mini will go on sale on 2 November with prices starting at £269. The iPad Mini is available in various different models consisting of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB each with the choice of Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi with 4G. The colours match the iPhone 5 with white/silver or black/slate.

The 7.9in screen uses the same 1024 x768 resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2. It's powered by the dual-core A5 processor and uses the smaller Lightning dock connector which was brought in with the iPhone 5.

The iPad Mini is 7.2mm thick and 308g in weight – that's 23 percent thinner and 50 percent lighter than the latest iPad. Other specifictions include a FaceTime HD webcam, 5Mp rear iSight camera 4G LTE connectivity and a 10 hour battery life.

Apple also announced a new 13in MacBook Pro with Retina display, a refreshed Mac Mini and a refreshed iMac line-up.
