Google to reveal Nexus tablet at Google I/O

Google set to announce iPad rival at Google I/O

Google will reveal an own-brand Nexus tablet at its I/O conference which starts today.

The much rumoured tablet, possibly called the Nexus 7, will be revealed at Google I/O, according to Bloomberg. The Android-based tablet will be made by Asus and retail for $199.

Google Nexus 7 tablet

As well as the hardware itself, the Nexus tablet will debut the next version of Google's Android operating system for smartphones and tablets. It will be version 4.1 and called Jelly Bean. See also: Android Jelly Bean release date, features, rumour round-up.

Earlier this week an image along with specification of the Nexus tablet were leaked online. It will reportedly use a 1.3GHz nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM.

The $199 price will be for an 8GB model with a supposed $249 16GB model also to be available. Other features include NFC, a 1.2Mp webcam and a nine hour battery life.

Google will be looking to increase Android's market share in the tablet sector and will go up against the likes of Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle Fire. Microsoft will be also joining the own-brand tablet party with its Surface RT and Surface Pro.
