Microsoft to announce own-brand tablet today

Microsoft's 'strategic partnership' with Barnes & Noble will result in a tablet

Microsoft will allegedly unveil its own tablet today to take on Apple's iPad.

It has been widely speculated that Microsoft will announce an own-brand tablet at a press conference in Los Angeles today. It is thought that the Windows 8-based tablet will go head-to-head with Apple's iPad. See also: Live: Microsoft LA press event.

Invitations to the event were sent to members of the press out on Friday leading to a frenzy of conjecture. The venue for the event has not even been disclosed yet.

It's possible that the tablet will be built in partnership Barnes & Noble after Microsoft invested a cool $300m in a subsidiary called Newco. The news which came in May brought with it the possibility of a tablet alongside eReader devices. See also: Microsoft-Barnes & Noble deal could lead to Windows-based tablet.

"Microsoft’s investment in Newco, and our exciting collaboration to bring world-class digital reading technologies and content to the Windows platform and its hundreds of millions of users, will allow us to significantly expand the business." said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble.

On the other hand Microsoft could announce its acquisition of business social network Yammer. According to a report on Friday the software giant had struck a $1bn deal to buy the 'Facebook for the workplace'.
