RIM slashes price of PlayBook to £169

All three versions are available for $299 in the US

Research in Motion (RIM) has slashed the price of its PlayBook tablet PC to £169.

In the UK, the tablet PC, which was launched in April last year, is available for £169 for the 16GB version through Currys, Dixons and PC World. Meanwhile, the 32GB models is priced at £199 and the 64GB capacity costs £329. This is second price drop by RIM, as the firm initially cut the price of the devices to £249, £329 and £409 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions respectively in October last year from £399, £479 and £559.

Meanwhile, in the US, all three models are available for $299 (£191) from BlackBerry's online store. This makes the 64GB model over half its original cost of $699.

RIM has yet to comment on the slash in prices.

RIM has also delayed the next iteration of its PlayBook OS 2.0 mobile operating system, which will ensure the device can support email without the need to be linked to a BlackBerry smartphone. The software is expected to be made available in February this year.

In September last year, an analyst's report claimed the death of the BlackBerry Playbook was imminent and RIM had stopped production of the device.

"Rumors suggesting that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued are pure fiction" RIM spokeswoman Marisa Conway told Reuters at the time.

"RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market and the future of QNX in its platform."

The tablet PC has a 7in WSVGA capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels and runs off a 1GHz dual-core processor.
