Dell Streak 7 tablet goes onsale in UK

£299 Android tablet available today

Dell has officially unveiled the Streak 7 Android tablet in the UK – and given the Wi-Fi version of the 7in screen device a price tag of just £299. The Dell Streak 7 is a Google Android 2.2 Froyo device that runs off a 1GHz nVidia Tegra 2 processor. It has a WVGA screen clad in scratchproof Gorilla Glass, a 5Mp rear camera and a 1.3Mp webcam. Primed with 16GB of memory, the Dell Streak 7 has a SD Card slot so its memory complement can be stretched to 64GB.

As well as fairly standard Google Android features such as the Chrome Lite web browser, Gmail email client, Amazon MP3 music downloads and access to the Android Market app store, the Dell Streak 7 offers support for traditional business applications including Microsoft Exchange email, calendar and contacts. Adobe Flash Player video playback is also supported, while Dell includes the popular Swype text entry app as an alternative to either t9 alphanumeric entry or the onscreen Qwerty keyboard.

Other features of the 7.87x4.72x 0.49in Android tablet are an accelerometer, GPS and Bluetooth 2.1.

Aongus Hegarty, Dell’s vice-president of consumer, small and medium business units for EMEA, said “Dell is continuing to create the very best in entertainment, mobile and gaming experiences. With Streak 7, families, students and mobile professionals will gather, share and find new ways to interact and keep in touch.”

The Streak 7 is a bigger brother to the 5in Streak tablet-smartphone hybrid device that Dell launched last year. However, the original model launched at £399 SIM-free or £25-a-month on an O2 contract.

This time round Dell is launching a Wi-Fi version for £299 with a model sporting both Wi-Fi and 3G set to go onsale “later this spring”. Pricing for the 3G model has not been announced. The Dell Streak 7 is already onsale in the US where it costs an enviable $199. A 4G version has also been announced for the US, but the UK does not yet have the necessary network infrastructure in place to support this faster mobile technology.
