iPad 2 UK supply shortages ease

Wait for iPad 2 cut from 3-4 to 2-3 weeks

Here's some good news for UK customers eager to get their hands on the Apple iPad 2: supply shortages seem to be easing.

Although a lucky few managed to get their hands on the iPad 2 on its UK launch day, online orders had been pushed back to two to three weeks in the early hours of the morning of Friday 25 March.

By the weekend, Apple was listing shipping times of three to four weeks, and was still saying the same as recently as yesterday.

However, this morning PC Advisor's sister site Macworld reported that shipping times are now back to two to three weeks, suggesting that shortages caused by the initial backlog of orders are starting to ease.

Apple Insider reports that the online Apple Store in the US has also shortened its shipping estimates to two to three weeks.

Demand for the iPad 2 has been high since it launched in the US in early March, with some analysts estimating that it sold one million units in its first weekend of sale.

However, there was speculation that the overwhelming demand in the US and component supply issues caused by the recent natural disasters in Japan could delay an international launch. But the international launch of the iPad 2 did go ahead as planned, except in Japan.

Those wanting to buy an iPad 2 through Apple can get the Wi-Fi only 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models for £399, £479 and £559 inc VAT respectively. For the Wi-Fi + 3G models you will pay £499, £579 and £659 inc VAT.

Subsidised deals are available through ThreeOrangeT-Mobile and Vodafone, although you'll need to sign up to a 2-year contract.
