Apple iPad 2 component list leaked in report

Analyst claims better quality screen but no retina display

More details about the specifications of the next-generation iPad have emerged in a report by a Taiwanese analyst.

Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a note to investors over the weekend outlining the specifications and features of the iPad 2, reports Apple Insider. According to the note, the screen will be of higher quality but will not feature a retina display. The quality of the screen will be improved as it will be thinner and have better anti-reflective properties.

Between 4.5 million and 5 million units will be manufactured in the first quarter, the report states, and Foxconn will be the sole assembler of the Apple iPad.

"Thanks to anti-reflection, iPad 2 could have better sunlight readable experience and it's helpful for Apple to compete with Amazon's fast growing Kindle business. The most important reason why iPad 2 won't have retinal display is yield rate of panel making. At this point, making high resolution and bright IPS/FFS panel is not easy and the production volume and cost couldn't meet Apple's requirements," the note reads.

The TFT-LCD displays will be made by LG and Samsung, with the touch panels manufactured by TPK and Wintek. The processor will be made by Samsung having been designed by Apple, the report claims.

The processor will be a dual-core Cortex A9 running at 1.2GHz and the GPU will be Imagination's dual-core SGX543. There will be 512MB of RAM, twice as much as the original iPad.

There will also be GSM and CDMA versions of the iPad 2, the report claims, though it is unclear whether the device will have an SD card slot. Two cameras, a front-facing 0.3MP camera and a rear-facing 1MP camera, will be present, the report says.

There are few, if any surprises in the analyst's note - all of the features outlined above such as the A9 processor have been reported as long ago as August. Talk of a retina display was rubbished just last week.
