Apple has introduced new Editors' Choice and Free App of the Week promotions in its iOS and Mac App Stores, aiming to subtly improve app discovery among the thousands of apps available.
The new Editors' Choice apps are featured on the homepages of both App Stores. At present, the iTunes App Store's Editors' Choice apps are the newly released Facebook Camera, Air Mail, Extreme Skater and The Thames: London's Crown Jewel.
On the Mac App Store, the Editors' Choice has been given to Cobook and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Apple also tweeted from its official App Store account, advertising a Free App of the Week. The tweet reads: "Cut the Rope: Experiments is our #FreeAppoftheWeek. Go to the App Store for your free download." It is not yet clear whether Apple will continue the Free App of the Week promotion every week.
Apple acquired search company Chomp in February, indicating that it is planning on further improving the way users can find applications within the App Stores. Chomp's search engine helps users find mobile apps on their functions, and not just their name.
Apple users have criticised the App Store's current search system, which is a simplistic title-based search engine that makes finding apps among more than 600,000 available for iOS like finding a needle in a haystack.
