App downloads hit 1.2 billion in last week of December

Final days of the year also saw record-breaking numbers of device activations

More than one billion apps were downloaded in the last week of December, according to Flurry.

Data from the analytics firm revealed a total of 1.2 billion apps were downloaded between December 25 and December 31, which is the largest number of app downloads in one week in the history of iOS and Google Android. On Christmas Day alone, 242 million apps were installed worldwide.

The US was responsible for 509 million of these downloads, or around 42 percent. Meanwhile, China came second accounting for 99 million of the total downloads and the UK took third position with 81 million downloads.

Flurry said the record-breaking number of iOS and Android device activations was partly responsible for the surge in app downloads. Some 6.8 million devices were activated on Christmas Day, while in total more than 20 million smartphones and tablet PCs were activated in the last week of December.

"Looking forward to 2012, Flurry expects breaking the one-billion-download-barrier per week will become more common-place," the firm said in a blog.

"While iOS and Android growth continues to amaze, the market is still by all measures relatively nascent. We look forward to continuing to chart the unprecedented adoption of mobile computing devices, usage of applications and the way in which this technology is changing consumer behaviour worldwide."

While Apple won't disclose how many devices were activated, Google said more than 3.7 million Android smartphones and tablet PC were activated over the festive period.
