Adobe to stop work on mobile Flash, refocus on HTML5 - report

Adobe partners told development of Flash Player for browsers on mobile devices to stop

Adobe has reportedly told its partners that it will stop the development of Flash Player for browsers on mobile devices and instead focus its efforts on HTML5.

ZDNet reports that sources close to the company have been briefed on Adobe's plans with an official announcement expected imminently.

The report quotes the sources as saying: "Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores.

"We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates."

Additionally, a summary of an email sent to Adobe partners confirms that the company plans to stop development on Flash Player for browsers on mobile. Instead, it will focus on applications for mobile, increasing investments in HTML5 and creating expressive content on the desktop (in and out of browser).

A full announcement is expected in the next 24 hours, according to the report. We'll bring you updates just as soon as we hear anything.
