Spotify unveils BlackBerry app

App currently only available as a preview

Spotify is giving BlackBerry users the ability to access the music-streaming service from their smartphones through a mobile app.

The app, which joins those already available for Apple iPhones, devices running Google Android and some Symbian, Palm and Windows Phone handsets, is in initally only available as a preview release.

It allows Spotify 'Premium' users that pay a £10 monthly subscription to browse and listen to tracks from Spotify's 13 million-strong catalogue, as well as giving them the ability to create and sync playlists even when there's no mobile net connection available.

Furthermore, users will also be able to star their favourite tracks, receive recommended songs from their friends via their Spotify inbox and even 'Scrobble' tracks to Last.fm (a way of identifying what tracks you like).

Spotify Premium also allows web users to stream as many songs as they like without listening to the ads that users of the free service hear

"We're excited today to announce our first preview release of Spotify for BlackBerry. As our sixth mobile app, BlackBerry comes packed with great features to keep you listening to your favourite music wherever you are," Spotify said in a blog.

Spotify said it has tested the app on the 9780 Bold, 9700 Bold, 9300 Curve, 9000 Bold and 8520 Curve handsets. However, it doesn't work on the BlackBerry Torch 9800 at present. However, it did not reveal exactly when the final version of the app will be made available.

The Spotify for BlackBerry preview app can be downloaded from the music-streaming service's dedicated web page now.
