RIM offers free apps as an apology for BlackBerry outage

SIMS 3 and Bejeweled among the free apps being offered

Research in Motion (RIM) is to give BlackBerry users affected by a four day service outage last week that saw email and messaging services floored, a number of premium apps for free.

SIMS 3, Bejeweled and Shazam Encore are among the apps that will be offered to BlackBerry subscribers. RIM said the complete selection of apps being offered for free are worth a total of $100.

"Our global network supports the communications needs of more than 70 million customers," said RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis. "We truly appreciate and value our relationship with our customers. We've worked hard to earn their trust over the past 12 years, and we're committed to providing the high standard of reliability they expect, today and in the future."

Meanwhile, BlackBerry enterprise users will be offered one month's technical support for free.

"We are grateful to our loyal BlackBerry customers for their patience.We have apologised to our customers and we will work tirelessly to restore their confidence. We are taking immediate and aggressive steps to help prevent something like this from happening again."

RIM said the app would be available to download from Wednesday October 19 and will be on offer for four weeks.
