Newzbin2 releases software to prevent BT blocking access to the site

Legal action lead to BT being ordered to use Cleanfeed to prevent web users accessing the site

Newzbin2 claims it has created software that will prevent attempts by BT to stop web users accessing the site.

In July this year, BT was ordered to block access to the members-only site that offers links to other locations on the web where music, movies and other content can be illegally downloaded following legal action by the Motion Picture Association (MPA).

Under the ruling, which marked the first time an ISP had been ordered to block access to a website relating to illegal downloads, BT was ordered to use its own Cleanfeed technology, which is already used to block access to websites containing child sex abuse images, to prevent access to Newzbin2. The block is set to come infto force in mid-October.

The Newzbin Client 1.0.0.127, which is designed to circumvent Cleanfeed, was released yesterday. However, according to TorrentFreak the site is reluctant to reveal how the software works.

"We are pleased to announce the first Newzbin2 client software," Newzbin2 said.

"This is targeted at UK users who are likely to get blocked in October. This first version is a bit rushed and so not very polished. As time goes by we shall improve it and add features."

TorrentFreak said basic tests on the software, which is currently only available for Windows although OSX and Linux versions are planned, uses encryption methods and the TOR anonymity network.

BT would not comment on the issue.

The MPA initially started legal action against the original Newzbin in 2010, which resulted in the site being ordered to remove any material that infringed copyrights. However, Newzbin went into administration and was subsequently sold to new owners and launched again as Newzbin 2 from the Seychelles.
