Mozilla releases Firefox 6

Developer also updates Firefox for Android mobile browser

Mozilla has made the next versions of  its desktop and mobile browser, Firefox, available to web users.

Mozilla said the releases were part of a rapid cycle that will see regular feature improvements and stability updates made available every six weeks across its four development channels.

The Desktop version of Firefox 6, which is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems, will now only load tab groups (known as Panorama) when they're selected by the user to speed up the start time of the browser. Furthermore, the Awesome Bar highlights a website's domain name and the identity block is more prominent, which Mozilla says will help users "quickly identify where they are on the web".

The browser also features a new Web developer menu that offers access to tools that help developers build and debug websites directly in the browser, including Scratchpad that ensures developers can enter, execute, test and refine JavaScript snippets in Firefox without needing to work in a one-line console, as well as an auto-complete feature and the ability to customise the console's location. The browser also supports additional APIs.

Meanwhile, the developer has also updated its mobile browser for devices running Google's Android platform. Firefox for Android features a new-look interface while fonts and buttons have been optimised for tablet PCs.

The mobile browser also offers faster zooming, crisp text and reduced pixelation due to enhanced image rendering.

Mozilla said additional tablet optimisation and support is planned for future releases of Firefox for Android.

The latest version of Firefox for Android can be downloaded for free from the Android Market while those seeking to update their desktop browser to Firefox 6 should select Check for update from the About Firefox menu in the browser.
