AVG unveils Family Safety parental controls software

Monitor your child's online activity

AVG has unveiled Family Safety – parental controls software that aims to help parents protect their kids when they're surfing the web.

The software allows parents to create profiles for each child, which can be adjusted as the child gets older and as their digital behaviour and habits change. As well as blocking inappropriate content, such as pornographic sites, the software lets uses prevent access to over 80 different social networks including Facebook, MySpace and Bebo.

Furthermore, AVG Family Safety lets adults monitor when children are using the web, the software they open and what they're searching for on the net.

"At AVG we are aware that many parents are concerned they might not have the necessary tools to effectively protect their children from online threats. Parents need to feel safe in the knowledge that their children understand and are protected from web-based dangers," said J.R. Smith, CEO, AVG Technologies.

"With AVG Family Safety, AVG is taking its expertise in security technology and expanding it to new areas of online protection for the modern family."

Stephen Simpson from the security firms recommends parents speak openly to kids about the websites they use as well as discussing what personal details are acceptable to share and why some details are better kept private.

Simpson also said move the family PC to a location that can be easily viewed by other family members and if you suspect your child is being bullied or victimised online, contact the relevant help line such as Bullying UK or Stop Bullying.

"Although children may be adept at using the internet, they also need to be educated about its potential risks. AVG Family Safety enables parents to understand these risks, and educate their children about them," added Simpson.

AVG Family Safety is priced from £13 for a one year, three PC licence.
