Londoners: Find nearest 'Boris bike' with Yell app

iPhone and Android users can download app for free

Apple iPhone and Google Android users can make use of a new app that helps them pinpoint their nearest Barclays Cycle Hire bike.

The bikes are part of a new initiative in London, developed by Transport for London (TfL) and Barclays, that allows commuters to a hire a bicycle from one of the docking stations around the capital and ride it to their destination, returning it to their nearest docking station. At present the service requires users to sign up and pay a monthly fee to use the cycles, but TfL plans to introduce a pay-as-you-go scheme in the future.

The Yell for Bikes app, which has been developed by Yell.com, can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store or the Android Market, and offers real-time data on the number of bicycles and spaces currently available at docking stations.

There is also a timer that allows users to easily identify whether they'll exceed their free initial 30 minutes or move to the next charging band.

According to Yell, which has used data from the apps to identify the locations that have the highest demand for bikes and spaces, Notting Hill, Maida Vale, Paddington, Marylebone, Waterloo and Elephant & Castle are the areas where bikes are in the highest demand, while spaces are most wanted in Central London, the West End and the City.

"With the popularity of the scheme due to increase, our app will ensure that London cyclists can get the most out of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme," said Matthew Bottomley, director of new media at Yell.
