Windows 8 to launch in 2012?

Microsoft blog hints at release date for new OS

Microsoft's next operating system, Windows 8, looks set to be released in 2012, according to Microsoft Netherlands.

Website Winrumours spotted a blog on the Dutch site that said: "Microsoft is on course for the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before 'Windows 8' is on the market".

However, it's clear Microsoft wasn't ready to make the announcement and within hours the blog, which was celebrating Windows 7's first birthday, was edited and the information about Windows 8 removed.

Microsoft Netherlands has yet to comment on the blog.

This isn't the first-time 2012 has been touted as the release date for Windows 8. Last year, Microsoft roadmaps revealed at the company's Professional Developers' Conference (PDC) hinted that the OS would be available in 2012 – a release date that's consistent with previous Microsoft pledges to release a new desktop operating system every three years.

Earlier this year documents - purported to be from Microsoft insiders – were leaked online and offered a sneak peek at Microsoft's plans for Windows 8.
