Skobbler unveils ForeverMap for iPhone and iPad

Rival to Google Maps doesn't need a net connection

Skobbler has unveiled an offline map for Apple iPhone and iPad users.

ForeverMap, which can be downloaded from the app store now, is based on OpenStreetMap data and according to Skobbler "literally puts the whole of Europe into your pocket".

When the app, which is currently available for an introductory price of £2.39, is download it installs comprehensive maps of Europe to your Apple device, so it can be accessed instantly even when there is no internet connection available. The map offers compass integration, auto-turning support and auto-follow mode, to ensure the centres around the user'scurrent position. Users can also search for cities, streets or points of interest (POI). For many POI, Wikipedia information is also available.

Maps can be bookmarked and users can also get route calculations to identify a route, distance and estimated travelling time.

"We wanted to create the app that becomes the last word in the map space, the one app that provides orientation to users without the usual ifs and buts," commented Marcus Thielking, co-founder of skobbler.

"Users can now instantly access a detailed digital map of Europe, without any fear of the high roaming costs or potential lack of data connection usually associated with digital maps on the move."

Earlier this year, Skobbler launched a free satnav app for Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS users.
