Truphone slashes call charges of VoIP service

Call the US from 1.3p per minute

Truphone, the service that allows mobile phone users to get even cheaper calls thanks to Voice over IP (VoIP), has slashed its call charges.

The company has reduced the rate to call more than 30 destinations worldwide by an average of 60 percent, making charges as low as 1.3p per minute even when calling long-distance locations such as the US, France and even China.

Truphone offers free calls to other Truphone users, along with Google Talk and Skype members, when both parties have a Wi-Fi connection.

The service also intercepts calls to mobiles and international numbers and routes them over the internet, ensuring callers only pay local rather than premium rates.

"Truphone wants to take the pain out of keeping in touch with friends and family, whether at home or away," said Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson.

"Our wide range of applications, calling bundles, new calling rates and lower monthly plans make it easy and cost-effective for people to talk to their heart's content."

Truphone apps are available for a number of different mobile phones including Apple's iPhone and Google Android handsets, as well as Blackberry and Nokia devices.
