50 million now using Opera desktop browser

Just as many use its mobile browser, Opera Mini

Opera's desktop web browser is now used by 50 million people worldwide, according to the company.

The browser developer said the desktop version had 30 percent more users in March 2010 than it did the previous year.

Opera said another 50 million used its mobile browser, Opera Mini, to access the web from their mobile phone.

Opera's latest web browser, Opera 10.5, was launched in February this year

"Our focus on speed, security, innovation and usability continues to yield results. We always listen to the needs and wants of our users, and they reward us by choosing Opera," said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder of Opera Software.

Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, added: "Opera for Desktop delivers the fastest browsing experience on the planet, with a visionary approach to features and a user-friendly design."

Opera's latest browser, Opera 10.5, was launched in February this year and features a brand-new JavaScript engine, known as Carakan.

Opera says the engine works in conjunction with Vega, its new graphics library, to run web applications up to eight times faster than previous versions of the web browser.
