Microsoft Office Web won't work offline

Early version of hosted Office will be online only

Microsoft has announced that Office Web - a hosted version of the Microsoft Office suite - won't be accessible offline.

According to Microsoft senior vice president Chris Capossela, the browser-based versions of Excel, Word and PowerPoint won't have an offline mode to begin with.

Capossela told ZDnet.co.uk: "In the first generation we are certainly looking at having them be connected," he said. "For offline usage of course the Office suite is incredibly powerful".

A technical preview of hosted Office will be available later this year, but Microsoft has not yet made available specifics on pricing or availability of the full suite.
