Microsoft to kill Office 2003 SP2 support

Users urged to update to Service Pack 3

Microsoft is to stop supporting Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) in just three weeks, continuing its policy of dropping support for an Office service pack a year after its successor is released.

The software giant said Office 2003 SP2 users should update to SP3, which was released in September 2007 and includes a number of new security policies.

"Any security updates released on or before October 14 will support both Service Packs 2 and 3," said an employee called 'David' on a Microsoft blog. "Security updates released after October 14 will support only Service Pack 3."

Office 2003 SP3 made news earlier this year when Microsoft apologised to Corel for blocking some of the software developer's file formats on the grounds that they represented security risks. The most recent service pack for Office 2003 features new security precautions which block some older file types. Most of the blocked file types were Microsoft formats, but some third-party formats were also affected. Microsoft said the move was essential because "some older file formats are insecure".
