Alcatel-Lucent SA has agreed to buy NetDevices, a maker of all-in-one network gateways for branch offices and small and medium-size businesses.

NetDevices makes the Unified Service Gateway, which includes data and voice communications and security in a single box. Alcatel-Lucent, a major vendor of carrier equipment and a less significant player in LAN gear, said that traditional technology isn't flexible enough to handle these combined jobs cost effectively. It did not disclose how much it would pay for the privately held NetDevices.

WAN (wide-area network) gateways for small businesses and enterprise branches are getting smarter. Cisco's Integrated Services Router, which can be equipped for voice, data, wireless and security functions, has been one of the company's biggest hits in recent years.

NetDevices has 45 employees in California and in Bangalore, India. It was founded in 2003. The company will become part of Alcatel-Lucent's Enterprise Business Group after the close of the acquisition, expected in the second quarter.
