UK Microsoft licence vulture enters US

Office and Windows licences sold at a snip

A UK company that’s made a business out of selling pre-owned licences for Microsoft products has entered the US market for the first time.

Disclic recently closed its first deal selling licences it procured from companies going out of business in the UK to a company in the US, said Noel Unwin, a director of Discount-licensing.com, the website and trading arm of the company that sells the licences.

Discount-licensing.com sold licenses for Microsoft Office it obtained from two companies that divested their property in the UK - Food Brokers and Quidnunc - to WaferTech, a US semiconductor manufacturer, he said.

Discount-licensing.com also recently made its first deal selling licences it bought from a US company to companies in the UK, Unwin added. The company sold pre-owned licenses from an insolvent US firm, Cornell Trading, to UK businesses in September and October.

The UK businesses purchased licences for Exchange 2003, Terminal Server 2003 CALs, Windows and Office 2003 Professional.

Disclic has been gathering up Microsoft product licences from insolvent companies and distributing them through its website since November 2005. The company recently updated its site with comprehensive product search and ordering features, so customers can undertake their entire transactions online.

Unwin said prices for US customers are generally 15 percent less expensive than in the UK. The company sells pre-owned licences for about 35 percent to 40 percent cheaper than the original cost of the licence.
